NFL Insider Explains Why Chiefs Couldn’t Sign DeAndre Hopkins
Once the Arizona Cardinals surprisingly parted ways with superstar wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins earlier in the NFL offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs were named a potential destination for the five-time All-Pro.
Unsurprisingly, the prospect of adding Hopkins had Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid drooling, but for some reason, the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement, and it was never close.
There was a valid reason for the Chiefs seemingly passing on signing Hopkins, as the team was unable to make a contract offer due to the situation with Chris Jones, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
The #Chiefs (including Andy Reid) kept in contact on DeAndre Hopkins’ free agency. But with Chris Jones extension still not done and minimal cap space, Kansas City didn’t have a contract offer to compete.

Ultimately, Hopkins has agreed to a deal with the Tennessee Titans, which is one of the more surprising moves of the offseason, as many anticipated the veteran wideout to land with a title contender.
The Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots were also two teams supposedly interested in Hopkins’ services, but he ended up in Tennessee instead, which is a questionable move considering the state of the team.
As for the Chiefs, Kansas City missed an opportunity to bring in a proven star at wide receiver and make their offense that much more dynamic during their title defense.
However, as the Chiefs proved last season, Kansas City doesn’t need stars outside of Mahomes and Travis Kelce to be a true contender, as they were able to immediately bounce back from trading Tyreek Hill to win it all last year.
The Titans will have a welcome addition at wide receiver, but the shaky quarterback situation may lead to this addition hurting the team rather than helping, as he could become frustrated quickly if he’s not getting the ball regularly.
