The San Francisco 49ers have a roster that looks ready to seriously contend for the Super Bowl championship not just this coming season but for at least the next few seasons as well.

One of their biggest stars, if not their biggest star, is defensive end Nick Bosa, who is the NFL’s reigning Defensive Player of the Year and a terror for opposing quarterbacks.

With one year left on his contract, he is due for a hefty contract extension, and The Athletic’s David Lombardi says that the contract of Aaron Donald, the Los Angeles Rams’ star defensive tackle, could serve as a reference point for the value of Bosa’s first big pro contract.

Bosa had a monster year in 2022 with 48 quarterback hits, 19 tackles for loss, and a league-high 18.5 sacks, which earned him spots in the Pro Bowl and on the All-Pro First Team.

At the age of 25, his best football could mostly be ahead of him.

Thanks in large part to Bosa inducing fear in his opponents, the 49ers led the NFL in points and total yards allowed last season, and that defense has gotten them to three NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl in Bosa’s four seasons with them.

However, San Francisco hasn’t won it all since the 1994 season, back when Hall-of-Fame quarterback Steve Young was in his prime.

They haven’t had a true franchise quarterback since Young retired following the 1999 campaign, but there is a chance that Brock Purdy, who took the league by storm as a rookie last year, could become just that.
