Throwback jerseys have been very popular in team sports for many years, and plenty of fans love it when their favorite teams don such uniforms.

This coming season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will do so and honor their roots.

They will wear what has been dubbed their “Creamsicle” uniforms during their Week 6 game this season versus the Detroit Lions, and those uniforms will closely resemble the ones they wore during their first two decades of existence, via Ari Meirov on Twitter.

The Bucs entered the NFL as an expansion franchise in 1976, and in their first season, they became one of just a handful of teams to ever go winless for an entire season.

Although they briefly became competitive in the late-1970s and early-1980s, they were largely a laughingstock for most of their first 21 seasons.

But change came in 1997, and that change started with their uniforms.

The “Creamsicle” uniforms melted away in favor of the ones they have worn ever since, and they also adopted their current swashbuckling logo.

1997 was also the second season that Tony Dungy was their head coach, and that year, he drastically changed their culture.

Behind defensive tackle Warren Sapp, running back Warrick Dunn, and fullback Mike Alstott, Tampa Bay went 10-6 and made the playoffs for the first of four times in five years.

That streak culminated with their first Super Bowl championship in the 2002 season.

2023 will be the start of a new era for the team, as Tom Brady has retired and the talented but mercurial Baker Mayfield will take over at quarterback.

With the lack of depth across the NFC, perhaps the windows is slightly ajar for the Bucs to make the playoffs this coming season.
