Indonesian Islamic preacher
Yazid bin Abdul Qadir Jawas, Lc. (born 1963) is a writer, lecturer, ustad, and mubalig from Indonesia. In Indonesia, he is often associated with the ultra-conservative movement of Salafism.[1] He is also known for writing many religious Islamic books in Indonesian.[2] His lectures which are considered controversial make Yazid often receive criticism from a number of Indonesian Muslims.[3]
Early life[edit]
Very little is known about Yazid’s personal life. However, Yazid is known to have studied with Muhammad ibn al-Uthaymin, a Sunni scholar from Mecca.[4] Yazid was also reported to have mastered the book Bulugh al-Maram by Ibn Hajar which at that time it was claimed that only a few Indonesians could master it.[5][6]
Activity[edit]
Yazid is currently building a boarding school Islamic boarding school in Bogor Regency, namely the Minhajus Sunnah Islamic boarding school.[7] Apart from being busy with teaching activities for santri at the Islamic boarding school, he is also active as a resource person at Radio Rodja and fills in routine recitations and sermons in various cities in Indonesia.[8] Yazid also wrote many Islamic religious books in Indonesian.[9]
Critics[edit]
Yazid is criticized by some Indonesian Muslims as adherents of puritanical Islam and is often referred to as Wahhabism. Yazid’s critics tend to describe him as a puritanical, and very strict adherent of Islam.[10][11]
Maybe it happened because Yazid opposed the taqlid attitude which according to him has damaged the faith of Indonesian Muslims. Even so, a group of Muslims also praised Yazid and called him an intelligent and highly knowledgeable preacher.[12]
