Elly De La Cruz did not reach the All-Star Game this year, but several around the game believe that the Cincinnati Reds rookie phenom should have at least been considered for this year’s contest.

De La Cruz reached the Major Leagues in June and has since helped the Reds go on a tear which catapulted them to the top of the weak NL Central division.

The 21-year-old is hitting .325 with four home runs and 16 RBI.

He also has stolen 16 bases and has an OPS of .887.

On the MLB podcast “Fair Territory,” Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic commented on the fact that the young phenom is not an All-Star and a potential flaw in the process to determine who makes it and who doesn’t.

Rosenthal commented on how fans of baseball have become interested in De La Cruz and that he’s a player that everybody wants to watch.

He also talked about why he thinks De La Cruz should have been an All-Star and that there’s a serious flaw with the player ballot for replacements and the voting process.

This is because De La Cruz is such a compelling player to watch, even above other Reds rookies such as Matt McLain, Spencer Steer, and Andrew Abbott.

Rosenthal thinks that Major League Baseball needs to fix the system so that in the future, players such as De La Cruz can reach the All-Star Game early in their careers.

Closer Alexis Diaz is the lone member of the Reds who reached the All-Star Game this year.
