The Houston Rockets have made a couple of moves this offseason that have raised some eyebrows and left others shaking their heads.

They gave Fred VanVleet, a borderline All-Star point guard, a huge contract worth $130 million over three years, and some fans have mocked the contract as one that will become an albatross not too long from now.

Houston also acquired Dillon Brooks in a sign-and-trade by agreeing to a huge deal with him.

That deal was first reported to be worth $80 million over four years, but Adrian Wojnarowski recently said that it is actually $86 million over four years, with the possibility of it ultimately being worth $90 million if certain incentives are met.

Brooks, a 6-foot-7 wing, is known as a tenacious defender, and he spent his first six pro seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, a team he helped go from a doormat to a near-contender.

However, he has also made a name as something of a villain across the league.

He has been involved in a number of incidents, including a flagrant 2 foul that injured Golden State Warriors guard Gary Payton II in the 2022 playoffs and an incident in which he shoved a cameraman to the ground this past season.

In the 2023 NBA playoffs, he faced off against LeBron James, who he called “old,” in the first round, only to fall to James’ Los Angeles Lakers in six games.

$80 million over four years is a stiff price to pay for a player who has shot only 41.6 percent overall and 34.2 percent from 3-point range for his career, but the Rockets probably feel they have assembled a team that can make the playoffs next spring.
