Yankees Add A Reinforcement On Thursday

Once upon a time, not so long ago, Deivi Garcia was one of the top pitching prospects in the New York Yankees system.

It was like that until 2020, when he made his MLB debut with a 4.98 ERA in 34.1 innings.

Despite the elevated ERA, he walked few hitters and struck out a ton, and the Yanks thought they had a future star in the right-hander.

But injuries, control, and command issues derailed his career and cut his big league opportunities.

Until this year, when he earned a call-up a few weeks ago and nailed a three-inning save.

He was sent down after that outing, but the Yankees find themselves requiring his services again in early July.

According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, they have recalled him from Triple-A Scranton.

Garcia is expected to be a member of the bullpen for as long as he is up.

That’s the role he has been fulfilling in Scranton, with mixed results.

His season ERA as a member of the relief corps in Triple-A is 4.93 in 34.2 innings.

He has accumulated 34 strikeouts, which is good.

He also has 26 walks over those 34.2 frames, which is very bad.

Unfortunately, his control never came back and that lowered his ceiling considerably.

This time, he will be taking the roster spot vacated by Randy Vasquez, who was sent back to the minors after Wednesday’s spot start.

Garcia will try to impress the Yankees during his stint there, but odds are he won’t stick around on the roster for too long.
