NBA Insider Details The Grant Williams Sign-And-Trade
NBA free agency has been underway for less than a week, and there’s already been a ton of things going on in the league, with many players staying put on new contracts, some players changing teams, and a flurry of trades taking place.
On Wednesday, another deal went down between three teams, with the Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics, and San Antonio Spurs agreeing to a trade.
With the Mavericks not making any significant moves this summer outside of re-signing superstar guard Kyrie Irving to a three-year deal, Dallas has found other ways to improve its roster, like this three-team trade, which Shams Charania of The Athletic reported.
The Mavericks are acquiring Celtics restricted free agent Grant Williams on a four-year, $54 million deal via sign-and-trade, per sources. WME Sports’ Bill Duffy and Erik Kabe completed the new contract for Williams. https://t.co/5T77dCuMkA

The key piece in this three-team trade is forward Grant Williams being sent to the Mavericks, which could turn out to be a solid move for Dallas, who are desperately in need of players that can defend.
Over the past few weeks, there’s been a lot of speculation about Williams’ future in Boston, especially after the Celtics pulled off a blockbuster trade for versatile forward Kristaps Porzingis.
With the Celtics going all in on Jaylen Brown (at least for now), Jayson Tatum, and Porzingis, they have moved on from Williams and recently sent veteran guard Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies.
Boston will take a hit defensively without Smart and Williams but arguably improved with their new addition, as did the Mavericks, even though Reggie Bullock heading to the San Antonio Spurs hurts their shooting.
Only time will tell if this was ultimately a good move for Dallas, but it’s a good sign that this team is still willing to make moves to put more talent around Luka Doncic and Irving.
