The NBA Has Announced An Update To The Flopping Penalty
The NBA is trying to clamp down on the constant flopping, and it is about time.
Players were often rewarded by fooling the officials, and there were little-to-no penalties for that, even if they were caught.
Now, referees will be able to reward the opposite team with a free throw after a player gets called for flopping, and the said player will be hit with a non-unsportsmanlike technical foul — which doesn’t count as a personal foul or lead to ejection.
Notably, the league updated the rule by stating that the league’s resumption of play rules will apply, as opposed to the original proposal in which the rival team would also get possession of the basketball after the made free throw, per NBA Communications on Twitter.
An updated version of the proposed In-Game Flopping Penalty is below.

Also, the new rule states that officials won’t have to stop live play to call this violation, and they can wait until the next neutral opportunity to make the call.
It’ll be interesting to see whether they’re actually able to cut down on this annoying practice once and for all, and how many players will be hurt by this new rule.
LeBron James, Marcus Smart, Chris Paul, James Harden, Trae Young, and Joel Embiid could now have a tough time convincing the referees to call a foul.
They might not enjoy the league’s crackdown on flopping, but it was about time they did something to address this ever-growing issue once and for all.
