On Sunday, the New York Yankees were unable to follow up their win on Saturday with another victory, and ultimately dropped two out of three against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Gerrit Cole took the mound for the Yankees and gave them six innings, allowing just two runs.

Opposing him was former Yankee Jordan Montgomery, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and held the Yankees to one run after pitching into the seventh.

St. Louis won, 5-1, and Montgomery earned the win.

After the game, Cole accepted his defeat and ultimately texted his old teammate a meme of a cowboy tipping his hat.

Benjamin Hochman of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch provided the news.

Cole pitched well for the Yankees, but he couldn’t out-duel Montgomery as the Cardinals took the series.

But Cole clearly is still very close with his old teammate and was proud to see him pitch such a good game on Sunday.

The Yankees ace ultimately accepted his defeat and was more than happy to congratulate Montgomery on a great outing against his former team.

The Yankees traded Montgomery to the Cardinals at the deadline last August in exchange for Harrison Bader.

The left-hander earned his sixth win of the season and lowered his ERA to 3.28.

Cole kept the Yankees in the game, striking out five batters and walking just two while working around six hits against the Cardinals.

But Montgomery ultimately got the last laugh as he was able to hold his former club in check.

And Cole was certainly proud of him for what he was able to do.
