This season, when the St. Louis Cardinals have needed a spark, they have turned to their “burger phone.”

While on the bench, players will dial in the current hitter’s jersey number when they predict something big will happen.

On Sunday, Brendan Donovan’s two-run homer in the seventh inning gave the Cardinals a boost as they ultimately defeated the New York Yankees by a final of 5-1 and took the series.

When Donovan was at the plate, Cardinals legend and two-time World Series champion Adam Wainwright was in charge of the burger phone and ultimately dialed in his jersey number, predicting something big would happen.

After the game, Donovan commented on that moment and how it lifted the team.

Donovan was asked by Jim Hayes of Bally Sports Midwest if Wainwright putting his number in the phone gave him an extra boost during his seventh inning at-bat.

The super utilityman said that all he wanted to do in that moment was make Wainwright proud.

He said that he didn’t know at the time that the veteran right-hander had dialed in his number, but that he later discovered as much when the jumbotron at Busch Stadium showed him using the burger phone.

When he was told by his teammates, Donovan ultimately received a little extra energy.

He once again reiterated his desire to make Wainwright happy in that moment.

The Cardinals ultimately held on and won, but it was Donovan’s hit that put the game out of reach and sealed the deal for the Cards.
