The New York Giants were one of the NFL’s biggest surprises last season, as they won six of their first seven games, made the playoffs, and upset the 13-4 Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card round there.

They haven’t made any Earth-shattering additions this offseason, and therefore they will have to count on internal improvement to take the next step.

One young player they have high hopes for is defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, who was the No. 5 pick in last year’s draft and got some votes in the Defensive Rookie of the Year balloting.

Michael Strahan, the Hall of Fame Giants pass-rusher, has some lofty expectations for Thibodeaux in his second season, per Jordan Raanan.

Back in the day, Strahan was one of the best in the business from 1993 to 2007, as he was selected to seven Pro Bowls and four All-Pro First-Teams.

He led the NFL in sacks twice, and he ended his career by earning a Super Bowl championship in the 2007 season when the Giants upset the undefeated New England Patriots.

It is very premature to say Thibodeaux can match or even come close to what Strahan was for many years, but he is a promising prospect for New York.

The Giants were successful last season not because they had a very potent offense, but because they mucked things up and were greater than the sum of their parts.

If Thibodeaux makes the jump Strahan thinks he can, perhaps the Giants will be back in the playoffs this winter, and maybe they will even pull off another upset there.
