The Denver Nuggets currently hold a 2-1 series lead in the NBA Finals, with the Miami Heat struggling to figure out how to contain superstar center Nikola Jokic, who has been dominant in this series since the opening tip in Game 1.

Along with Jokic being dominant and cementing his legacy as one of the greatest centers ever to play the game, the Nuggets have a rising star in the form of point guard Jamal Murray, who has bounced back tremendously this year after missing the better part of the last two seasons due to a knee injury.

Although Murray is coming off his best performance in the Finals thus far, as he put up a triple-double with a game-high 34 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 10 assists, some have questioned whether he has become a superstar in this league.

Colin Cowherd of Fox Sports believes Murray isn’t a superstar and went as far as to use Denver Broncos legend John Elway being a bigger star in the Mile High City than the 26-year-old guard via NBA Central.

Cowherd is right on the money when he says that production on the basketball floor doesn’t mean he’s a superstar, as it is more of a matter of popularity than being really good in the athlete’s chosen sport.

Murray may be in the top-five player conversation at the point guard position in the NBA, but he’s nowhere near as popular as some of his peers around the league that might not be even top 15, like Derrick Rose or Cowherd’s example of LaMelo Ball of the Charlotte Hornets.

It’s unfortunate, but Murray just isn’t there yet and may never get there.
