2023 film by Eiichirō Hasumi

Resident Evil: Death Island[c] is an upcoming Japanese adult computer-animated action horror film set in the same universe as the Resident Evil video games. It is the fifth installment and fourth film in the animated Resident Evil series, following the 2017 film Resident Evil: Vendetta and the 2021 miniseries Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness.

It is scheduled for release in July 2023.

Synopsis[edit]

“D.S.O. agent Leon S. Kennedy is on a mission to rescue Dr. Antonio Taylor from kidnappers, when a mysterious woman thwarts his pursuit. Meanwhile, B.S.A.A. agent Chris Redfield is investigating a zombie outbreak in San Francisco, where the cause of the infection cannot be identified. The only thing the victims have in common is that they all visited Alcatraz Island recently. Following that clue, Chris and his team head to the island, where a new horror awaits them.”[3]

Setting[edit]

According to Capcom, the film will take place in the year 2015.[4] This places the film after the events of Resident Evil 6 (set in 2013) and Resident Evil: Vendetta (set in 2014), but before Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (set in 2017).[5]

Voice cast[edit]

Production and release[edit]

On February 2, 2023, the film was announced by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, with IGN posting an exclusive trailer for the film[3] and reported that the film will release in mid-2023, is directed by Eiichirō Hasumi and is written by Makoto Fukami.[3] Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will distribute the film worldwide, excluding Japan.[9]

The film will release theatrically in Japan on July 7, 2023,[1] with all other regions to be released via video on demand along with DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Blu-ray on July 25, 2023.[10]

Manga[edit]

In May 2023, Capcom announced a manga adaptation of Death Island, which will be serialized monthly on Kadokawa Corporation‘s Comic Hu, via Nico Nico Seiga. It is drawn by ZINO Kodakujii.[11][12]

Promotion[edit]

On April 18, 2023, Little Armory announced that they would produce 1/12 scale models of small arms used by Chris, Jill and Leon (M60, AA12, and M870).[13]

On April 19, 2023, Seiko, in collaboration with Capcom, announced two Resident Evil watches inspired by the film. The two watches will be based on designs inspired by Chris and Leon, and will release in May, limited to 600 copies worldwide.[14]
