Jets GM Reveals What Helped Complete The Aaron Rodgers Trade

For several weeks, the New York Jets negotiated with the Green Bay Packers to come to terms on a trade that would bring future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the Tri-state area.

As time dragged on, it seemed like trade talks weren’t progressing, and some wondered if Rodgers would even become a Jet at all.

But the trade finally got completed on Monday, and Jets GM Joe Douglas admitted that “one of the last things to be agreed to” was a swap of first-round draft picks, per Mike Garafolo.

Douglas adds the #Jets–#Packers pick swap in Round 1 from 13 to 15 was “one of the last things to be agreed to.” So that helped push it across the finish line for both sides.

New York gave up the No. 13 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, as well as a second-round pick this year and a conditional second-round choice next year that would become a first-round pick if Rodgers plays in 65 percent of the team’s snaps.

It was a lot to give up for a quarterback who is 39 years of age and saw his production drop significantly last season, and some even feel the Packers won the trade.

On the other hand, the Jets haven’t been to the playoffs since 2010, and they haven’t had a top-level quarterback since Joe Namath half a century ago.

Instead of hoping to sneak into the playoffs as a young upstart team, they will now be looking to reach the Super Bowl for the first time since Namath led them to an upset over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.

It is now championship or bust for New York, and the race for the AFC title has just gotten even more contentious.
