The New York Yankees had to place third baseman Josh Donaldson on the 15-day injured list on April 8, retroactive to April 6, with a right hamstring strain.

The injury occurred when he was running toward first base.

After a few days of rest and a rehab stint in the minors, he was eligible to return on Sunday.

The Yankees had him play an extra rehab game on Tuesday instead, and he had to be pulled after aggravating the injury.

“Josh Donaldson has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain. Aaron Boone said ‘it will probably be a couple of weeks,’” Yankees insider Bryan Hoch tweeted.

The official diagnosis is at least not as bad as it could have been, but the fact he hasn’t been able to shake the strain in a few weeks is disconcerting.

Now, he is probably looking at mid-May at the earliest for a potential return if there are no further setbacks.

Since Giancarlo Stanton is injured, the Yanks called up Oswald Peraza to play second and third base, the same positions DJ LeMahieu is capable of playing.

Gleyber Torres has been seeing a lot of DH starts, and Anthony Volpe, Peraza, and LeMahieu have occupied the remaining infield positions with Anthony Rizzo manning first base.

Still, New York will need Donaldson back as soon as he is healthy, for depth purposes and because he is the starting third baseman.

He wasn’t having a good season, with a poor .489 OPS in the early going.

The Yankees will probably give him at least two weeks, if not more, to rest before testing the hamstring again.
