Infrastructure, development top Worthington’s plans
Infrastructure will be a focus in Worthington in 2033 with water line replacements amid a shortage of needed materials.
City Engineer John Moorehead said the Colonial and Foster avenues water line project involves about 50 properties where service lines will be replaced during construction tentatively scheduled to begin in the second or third quarters of 2023.
“Worthington is facing a nationwide shortage of some critical water line material,” he said. “We expect some delay in acquiring those products, which will affect the project’s construction timeline. Once a schedule is finalized, staff will provide an informational notice to residents whose water services will be affected by the project.”
Council awarded the project to Strawser Paving Co. at its Dec. 5 meeting.
Strawser submitted the lowest bid for the project at $1,597,176, according to Moorehead.
Strawser has begun placing orders for pipe, fire hydrant and other material needed to complete the work, he said.
After reviewing proposals from design firms, the city also has entered into an agreement with EMH&T to design the Park Overlook Drive water line extension.
The design phase will last into the summer and the goal is to seek bids for construction of the project in late 2023, according to Moorehead.
Other city priorities in the new year include:
- Play ball! Construction of McCord Park phase 2 improvements include ball diamonds, the restroom facility in between those diamonds, completing the multi-use trail system – which will include a half-mile loop that circles the park – and realigning the entrance drive on Wilson Bridge Road. Construction is expected to be finished at the end of 2023.
- New leaders. A new city manager and police chief are expected to be hired and other key positions are expected to be filled as a result of anticipated retirements.
- Development. Opening major developments, including the Worthington Gateway shopping center and National Church Residences’ 85-unit redevelopment of the Stafford Village senior-housing community at 814 Hartford St.
