A behind-the-scenes look at the butterfly lights in Ohio

GAHANNA, Ohio — Holiday spirit is spreading across Columbus from the glow of butterfly-themed lights as pediatric patients admire from afar.

What You Need To Know

  • Eclipse Creative produced and assembled 150 butterfly-themed lights to help spread joy to pediatric patients
  • The project involved over 6,000 linear feet of LED light strips and 16,500 square feet of printed butterfly wings
  • It took at least six weeks to complete
  • The campaign runs through the end of the year

Over 150 butterflies are scattered around Central Ohio, but how did they land here of all places? And why?

It’s part of Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s ‘Light up the lawn, light up a life’ campaign.

This story begins at Eclipse Creative, a creative services company just outside Columbus, Ohio.

“I always tell people we’re not saving lives,” owner Jeff Burt said. “We’re not doctors, but in this instance, we’re actually helping doctors save lives because we’re raising money for that. That’s a home run.”

Burt was hands-on from the beginning.

“I have 42 employees,” said Burt. “They were all involved in this one. It’s a big project.”

The project involved over 6,000 linear feet of LED light strips and 16,500 square feet of printed butterfly wings

All that work was completed in no time.

“We actually turned this in about 6 to 7 weeks, which is really, really fast for a project this big, but it’s worth it,” Burt said.

From designing to integrating technology to assembling the butterflies on the lawn, Eclipse Creative and its partners did it all.

And now as the butterflies shine brightly over the holidays, their work is building more than joy for those in the hospital.

“I hope it gives them something to be excited about during the holidays. It’s giving everyone hope for the future,” said Burt.

The campaign runs through the end of the year.
