Gorge Dam removal underway, Ohio contributes $25 million

The state of Ohio is contributing $25 million to the removal of the Gorge Dam in Gorge Metro Park, with the first official step of the removal process starting Monday.

But don’t expect to see anything different at the dam site itself. The first step is only tree removal activities at the Chuckery Area of Cascade Valley Metro Park, where tons of contaminated sediments from behind the dam will be placed, according to Summit Metro Parks.

According to the park district, the Chuckery Area is historically a dumping site and will be used as the permanent disposal area for the contaminated sediment. The trees have to be removed to make room to store the sediment.

“We are putting it in a better location, where it can be managed in perpetuity,” Summit Metro Parks Chief of Conservation Mike Johnson said at a community meeting on the project last month. “Ideally, it would be great if we could make it disappear, but we can’t do that.”
