“Demo dame” Halle Berry surprised her fifth-grade teacher in Cleveland with a total home makeover courtesy of HGTV’s “Celebrity IOU.” Yvonne Sims, 71, took a 10-year-old Halle under her wing four decades ago, and the two have remained close ever since.

  • “She saw that I needed to be mentored and she stepped in,” the Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress told the show hosts, the “Property Brothers” Drew and Jonathan Scott. “She quickly became more than a mentor, almost like another mother.”
  • Sims, whose house was built in the 1920s, and her husband Rufus have lived in the home for 34 years. She is a wife, mother and grandmother.
  • Two other former students inspired by Sims joined Berry to tell the retired teacher how much she inspired them. “I am so proud,” an emotional Sims told them. “God is amazing. And He has allowed me to be a part of this.”

The episode will air again June 13, June 18 and other dates

2) Sunday night’s parish festival for St. Mary Magdalene in Willowick turned into a chaotic brawl among teen-agers and led to several arrests. Police said hundreds of teens taunted police and fought with each other in the streets.

  • Officers from Willowick, Willoughby, Willoughby Hills, Wickliffe, Eastlake and Kirtland responded to quell the violence.
  • Father Steven Breck, pastor at St. Mary Magdalene, said: “Your intention is to provide something fun and then to have an event where people of all ages are being terrorized should not have happened in this community or any community.”
  • “I’m actually really sick to my stomach that this happened,” Chief Brian Turner said.

More Ice Cream Shop Recommendations

Yesterday, we shared some local hot spots for cool treats recommended by Cleveland Daily readers. Here’s another one:

  • CP’s Cooler, Willowick: “They not only have some of the best homemade ice cream, but the owner cares greatly about her staff and their well-being. She routinely holds sales where the proceeds go to support the higher education needs of her teen employees, and will partner with other local businesses for ice cream accompaniments like cupcakes and no-bake cookie dough.”

Sounds like a business worthy of a visit.
