National boxing qualifier sees 17 Ohio fighters advance to finals


CLEVELAND, Ohio – Seventeen Ohio boxers have advanced to today’s finals as part of USA Boxing’s national qualifier.

Eleven of the 17 are from Northeast Ohio.

The weeklong event culminates with the finals as boxers compete in junior (ages 15-16), youth (ages 17-18) and elite (ages 19-40) championship bouts.

Boxers earn ranking points to gain potential seeding advantage for the national championships in December in Texas.

• Asia Smith, Cleveland, elite female, 114

• Marcellus Smith, Shaker Heights, youth male, 112

• Francis Stewart, Cleveland, elite male, 119

• Lamar Stewart, Toledo, junior male, 165

• Margaret Whitmore, Cleveland, elite female, 139

• Nevaeh Williams, Euclid, junior female, 145

• Ryan Williams, Toledo, youth male, 112

• Yu’shore Williams, Toledo, junior male, 110

At this week’s introductory news conference for the qualifier, organizers said a Cleveland boxer has been part of the last four Olympic Games. The next Olympics are in Paris in 2024.

The weeklong boxing event brought more than 1,700 fighters, coaches and support staff to Cleveland. It is a joint effort between the boxing organization, the city of Cleveland and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.

Info: Finals tickets are $25. Ages 7 and younger get in free. Tickets can be purchased online or at the Wolstein Center box office.

Times:

• Junior finals, 4 p.m.

• Youth finals, 6 p.m.

• Elite finals, 8 p.m.
