BIG TEN CHAMPS! No. 1 Maryland Defeats No. 9 Ohio State, 19-12

COLLEGE PARK, MD — No. 1 Maryland clinched a share of the 2022 Big Ten Championship with a 19-12 victory over No. 9 Ohio State on a sun-splashed Saturday afternoon at Maryland Stadium. This marked the Terps sixth Big Ten Championship and the second year in a row that they won the title against Ohio State. Maryland is a perfect 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten. 

Maryland was down 10-9 in the third quarter but used a decisive 8-1 run to run away from the Buckeyes and clinch the Big Ten title. Maryland outscored the Buckeyes 12-5 in the second half. 

Logan Wisnauskas scored seven points and tied his season-high with five goals, which he also did against High Point on Feb. 5th. Jonathan Donville (one goal and three assists) and Eric Malever (two goals and two assists) each scored four points.  

The Terps faced their largest deficit of the season, trailing Ohio State 7-3 with 9:53 left in the second quarter, but the Terps reeled off four goals late in the second quarter to tie the game at halftime, 7-7. 

Ohio State is 8-4 and 2-2 in the Big Ten as Colby Smith led them with three goals while Jack Myers had two goals and four assists for six points. 

Breaking Down The Action

• The Terps jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Eric Malever and Roman Puglise. Ohio State answered with two goals by Scott White and Jason Knox to tie the game at 2-2. After Anthony DeMaio made it 3-2, Ohio State scored the game’s next five goals — the longest run of goals by a Maryland opponent this season — to lead 5-3 after the first quarter and 7-3 early in the second quarter.
• Ohio State goalie Skylar Wahlund was tremendous making five of his nine first-half saves in the first 15 minutes, including a stretch of three consecutive saves to thwart the Terps in the final three minutes of the first quarter. 
• Wisnauskas got Maryland back on the scoreboard after nearly 15 minutes of being held scoreless with two goals in a span of 1:46 to cut the Terps’ deficit to 7-5 with 7:14 left in the first half. Jonathan Donville and Jack Koras scored to close to half and level the score at 7-7.
• The Terps reeled off five goals in the third quarter as Wisnauskas (X2), Puglise, Keegan Khan, and Wierman all tallied in the third frame as Maryland took a 12-11 lead going into the fourth. Maryland also brought in 10 ground balls in the third quarter after brining in just nine in the first half combined.
• The Terps scored the first five goals of the fourth quarter as DeMaio, Malever, Wisnauskas, Khan, and Jack Brennan all scored in the first seven and a half minutes.

• 4: Puglise scored two goals in a game for the fourth time in his career and second time this year.
• 4: Brennan collected his fourth multi-goal game of his career. 
• 9: Malever has nine career multi-goal games. 
• 16: Wisnauskas has sixteen career-games with four goals
• 23: DeMaio has 23 multi-goal games in his career and five this season. 
• 299: Wisnasukas collected his 299th point on Malever’s fourth-quarter goal with 12:03 remaining.

• Fifth-year attackman Logan Wisnauskas added to his lead as the all-time Maryland point scorer as his seven-point day now gives him 299 points as a Terp.
• He has recorded a point in all of his 68 games as a Terp and has 34 hat tricks in those games.
• He now has 179 career goals, second all-time to Jared Bernhardt (202).
• He also has 120 career assists, fourth all-time with Charles Wicker (121 from 1953-56) next on the list. Ray Altman (146 from 1961-63) holds the all-time record.
