All-Ohio boys basketball: Three players earn honorable mention in DII | Local Sports

Three area players were selected as honorable mention all-Ohio picks in Division II on Tuesday, commencing the final awards of the high school basketball season.

Defiance’s Cayden Zachrich, Napoleon’s Josh Mack and Wauseon’s Jonas Tester were all selected.

Zachrich, used his junior season to show just how much he had improved in the offseason. He led the Bulldogs in points (15.3), rebounds, field goal percentage (50.4) and 3-point percentage (43.8) as his team went 15-7, 7-2 WBL with a second place finish in the league only behind eventual DIII state runner-up Ottawa-Glandorf.

“It is an awesome achievement for a guy that puts in a ton of time and cares a lot about the game of basketball,” Defiance head coach Bryn Lehman said of Zachrich. “Going back to last summer, Cayden didn’t miss a single workout. I hope people in the community and young, aspiring players see that if you are dedicated and committed to improving and having success, you’ll be honored accordingly.”

“And while it’s an individual award, Cayden would be the first to tell you it is also a representation of his teammates and the positions they put him in to have success,” Lehman added. “I can’t say enough about him as a person and a player. He’s a joy to coach!”

Defiance was ousted in sectional finals, however, by Napoleon. The Wildcats reached districts for the first time since 2016 and saw the outcome of a rebuild. Mack was led the push back to winning for the Napoleon and for it he was rewarded an honorable mention selection.

The senior tallied a team-best 14.3 points per game while being second on the team in rebounds per game with 6.2. Though the six seed in their district, the Wildcats marched all the way to district finals after their defeat of Defiance and Lima Shawnee before falling to St. Marys and Ohio State commit Austin Parks.

“Josh has worked very hard and is deserving of this special award. He is a great kid on and off the floor and I couldn’t be happier for him,” Napoleon head coach Chad Bostelman said. “His future is very bright and will be successful in whatever path he chooses.”

Wauseon also saw a bit of a surprise run in the postseason as well behind their senior leader Jonas Tester.

After a 13-9, 4-3 NWOAL record and fourth place league finish, the Indians were able to upset fourth-seeded Van Wert in sectional finals to get to districts where they lost to St. Marys.

Tester led the way with 14.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.

“The all-Ohio recognition is greatly deserved and is the culmination of a tremendous career for us,” Wauseon head coach Chad Burt said of Tester. “Jonas has worked extremely hard to make himself the player that he is today. He is one of the best leaders by example that I have every coached which will leave a great impact on our young players and our program for years to come.”
