WELLSVILLE — Cafeteria staff at Wellsville were recognized at Monday’s meeting after getting more students to participate in eating the free breakfast at the school.

Board members also recognized an employee Tim Householder for proactively addressing a problem with the turf field at Nicholson Stadium.

During National School Breakfast Week, March 14-18, the cafeteria encouraged students to eat school breakfast by offering daily prizes. A lucky student who found a star under their milk carton or tray won that day’s prize.

According to Treasurer Nancy Francis said the prizes given to students included 100 multi-colored pencils, a $10 gift card to Dairy Queen, A $15 gift card to Domino’s and $20 gift cards from Family Dollar and Dollar General.

In a School Nutrition Program update from the Ohio Department of Education, the Wellsville Local Schools received recognition for their program’s efforts to get more students and parents to make the extra push for students to arrive at school in time to have breakfast before classes begin.

“Our cafeteria staff makes sure those kids see a smile everyday,” Francis said after the board meeting. “It’s nice to see them recognized for their outstanding efforts.”

The board also recognized Householder, who according to Joe Traina from building and grounds noticed a problem with just the orange sections of the field after doing required maintenance on it.

Located in the end zones and along the sidelines where players stand, Householder noticed that many pieces of the orange were deteriorating while the green, white and black sections were not. A call was made to the architect, who in turn contacted AstroTurfCorp., the company that made the field surface that was just installed in 2019.

Traina said the company sent someone to look at the problem and it was determined that the orange turf may not have received enough or any UV protection treatment that it should have had. The company determined the section was under warranty and agreed to replace it.

“I’m glad we went with AstroTurf,” Traina said, “a company that stands behind the product.”

During Monday’s meeting several things were touted that show the school district moving back to some normalcy after the pandemic. Superintendent Richard Bereschik noted while the school remains diligent with protecting the students, this weekend there will be performances of the Little Mermaid with the only limitations on the size of the audience dictated by the size of the cafetorium.

Board members also passed permission for field trips, including the three day stay at Camp Fitch on April 11-13 for two grade levels so those who did not get the opportunity last year get that chance. Other field trips included Daw choir going to the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center on April 29, the high school student council traveling to the PNC Park Education Day on May 11 and the third graders at Garfield traveling to the Carnegie Science Center.

Finally, the board approved bidding a bus through the Ohio Mid-Eastern Regional Education Service Agency (OME-RESA) cooperative.
