Ohio Softball Wraps Up Day Two at Bulldog Classic

ATHENS, Ga.– The Ohio softball team (3-10) returned to action Saturday (March 5) at the Bulldog Classic. The Bobcats fell short in both of their day two games, against No. 16 Georgia (16-2), 8-0 (5 innings) and Appalachian State (11-6), 7-0. 
 
GAME ONE: NO. 16 Georgia 8, Ohio 0 (5 Innings) 
Georgia outhit the Bobcats, 9-2 in Ohio’s first game of the day. The Bobcats left two runners on base while the Bulldogs stranded three. 
 
Fifth years Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) and Megan McMenemy (Westerville, Ohio) were the only Bobcats to reach base, they both went 1-for-2. 
 
Ohio recorded the first hit of the game with a single to right field from McMenemy. However, Georgia would go on to score four runs in the next frame. Junior Sara Mosley, hit a three-run home run to give Georgia an early 3-0 lead. The fourth run came on a solo home run by junior Sydney Kuma which sent the Bobcats to the top of the second trailing 4-0. 
 
The Bulldogs added three more in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run home run by senior Lacey Fincher. Then, with two outs, sophomore Aniyah Black reached base on a fielder’s choice which allowed Kuma to advance home and increase Georgia’s lead to seven. 
 
Ohio looked to be on the move offensively in the top of the fourth after Rice reached on a single to left field. However, the Bobcats were not able to capitalize and stranded the runner. 
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Georgia registered it eighth run on a home run by sophomore Sydney Chambley to seal the win for the Bulldogs. 
 
In the circle for the Bobcats, senior Kylie Coffelt (Bradford, Ohio) took the loss for the Bobcats, allowing eight runs on nine hits and walked two in four innings. 
 
GAME TWO: Appalachian State 7, Ohio 0
Appalachian State outhit Ohio, 9-6 in the final game of day two in the Bulldog Classic. The Bobcats left five runners on base and did not commit an error while App State left six runners on base and avoided errors. 
 
Individually, fifth year Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) went 3-for-3 with sophomore Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) closely behind as she went 1-for-3 with a double. Rice also went 1-for-3. 
 
After a scoreless first inning, App State got on the board first in the bottom of the second after freshman Addie Wray lined out to center, advancing senior Mary Pierce Barnes home. On the very next pitch, with two runners on base, Appalachian State sophomore Emma Jones hit a three-run home run to right field. 
 
Ohio threatened in the next frame having runners on after sophomore Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was hit by a pitch and Englant hit a single that put Bobcats on second and first base. Senior Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) then reached on a fielder’s choice but resulted in Englant caught at second. Unfortunately, the Bobcats left both runners stranded trailing 4-0. 
 
App State added three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to seven. 
 
The Ohio defense was able to keep Appalachian State from finding home and adding to their lead for the remainder of the game but was unable to generate runs to overcome App State’s early lead.
 
In the circle, senior Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) pitched six innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits in the loss. 
 
Up Next: 
The Bobcats will take on UMass Sunday (March 6) morning at 10:30 a.m. in the final day of the Bulldog Classic.
