Medina school board ousts head baseball coach
MEDINA, Ohio — The Medina City Schools Board of Education has terminated head baseball coach Nick Kaplack’s supplemental coaching contract after reports of concerning behavior.
The board first passed a resolution to suspend Kaplack’s contract weeks before the new high school baseball season was scheduled begin, after which he had the opportunity for a hearing with the board.
Kaplack, who is a teacher at the high school, did not reach out for a hearing and his contract was terminated.
“If the board approves the following recommendation, our intent as a school district is to move forward with our baseball program without interruption. Our intent will be to move with our assistant coaches to continue with practices,” Superintendent Aaron Sable at the last school board meeting.
The board alleged that Kaplack spoke in a degrading manner to student athletes in a post-game lecture last spring. An unidentified parent reported the incident. It was also shared that other complaints have been filed against him.
The board heard claims that this incident was another example of poor student athlete management and supervision and that Kaplack has also soured relationships with people and organizations outside of Medina and the school district.
The board explained that, while investigating the claims, students described the coach’s behavior as being blunt, not very friendly, not motivating and that he is unable to let little things go.
The district is working to fill the head coaching position while current members of the coaching staff step up to assume some of the responsibilities until then.
