No. 1 Penn State Hosts No. 6 Ohio State Friday in BJC Dual, No. 7 Nebraska Sunday in Rec

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Fresh off three road duals in seven days, the Penn State Nittany Lions (14-0, 6-0 B1G), ranked No. 1 in InterMat’s tournament power index (TPI), close out the Big Ten portion of their schedule this weekend with two home duals against top ten opponents. Penn State hosts No. 6 Ohio State (6-2, 2-2 B1G) on Friday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. in the 2022 BJC Dual. Two days later, the Nittany Lions welcome No. 7 Nebraska (*5-2, 2-2 B1G) to Rec Hall on Sunday, Feb. 6, at 12 p.m. Both duals are B1G Network national telecasts. *Nebraska hosts Michigan on Friday while Penn State hosts Ohio State, post-press.

Penn State is coming off a thrilling 19-13 win at Iowa on Friday night.  The Nittany Lions got six wins in the dual: Drew Hildebrandt at 125, Roman Bravo-Young at 133, Nick Lee at 141, Carter Starocci at 174, Aaron Brooks at 184 and Max Dean at 197.  The win for Penn State was Iowa’s first loss of the season and the Nittany Lions emerged as the lone unbeaten team in the conference.

Drew Hildebrandt is ranked No. 6 nationally at 125 with a 5-1 record. Roman Bravo-Young is 11-0 and No. 1 at 133 and Nick Lee is 11-0 and ranked No. 1 at 141.  Beau Bartlett is 10-4 overall and is ranked  No. 18 at 149. Nittany Lion sophomore Terrell Barraclough is 6-7 at 157 while junior Tony Negron is 1-5.  Senior Brady Berge is ranked No. 11 at 165 and is 3-1 while Creighton Edsell has a 7-3 mark.  Sophomore Carter Starocci is ranked No. 1 at 174 with a 14-0 mark while junior Aaron Brooks is 12-0 and ranked No. 1 at 184.  Junior Max Dean is ranked No. 2 at 197 with a 13-1 mark while Greg Kerkvliet is 11-1 and No. 5 at 285.

Ohio State enters the dual meet coming off a bye weekend and is ranked No. 6 by InterMat (TPI). The Buckeyes feature nine ranked grapplers: Malik Heinselman is No. 10 at 125, Dylan D’Emilio is No. 20 at 141, Sammy Sasso is No. 2 at 149, Jason Hubbard is No. 33 at 157, Carson Kharchla is No. 4 at 165, Ethan Smith is No. 7 at 174, Kaleb Romero is No. 6 at 184, Gavin Hoffman is No. 21 at 197 and Tate Orndorff is No. 3 at 285.  Penn State leads the all-time series with Ohio State 23-12, including the last six straight. The Lions won the last meeting, 28-12, on Feb. 19, 2021 in Columbus. The Nittany Lions won the last meeting in Happy Valley, 20-16, on Feb. 15, 2020.

Nebraska is also coming off a bye weekend and will host Michigan on Friday night while the Nittany Lions entertain the Buckeyes.  The Cornhuskers are ranked No. 7 by InterMat (TPI). Nebraska features seven ranked grapplers: Chad Red Jr. is NO. 8 at 141, Ridge Lovett is No. 8 at 149, Peyton Robb is NO. 5 at 157, Mikey Labriola is No. 5 at 174, Taylor Venz is No. 9 at 184, Eric Schultz is No. 3 at 197 and Christian Lance is No. 12 at 285. Penn State leads the all-time series with the Cornhuskers 10-7-1, including the last six straight.  The Nittany Lions won the last meeting with NU, 20-18, on Jan. 24, 2020, in Lincoln. Penn State won the last meeting in State College, a 25-6 victory on Jan. 20, 2019.

Penn State wraps up its dual meet schedule on Sunday, Feb. 20, when it hosts Rider. The dual is set for 2 p.m. in Rec Hall and will serve as Senior Day for Penn State.

PENN STATE TAKES OUT HAWKEYES IN IOWA CITY,
WINNING THIRD ROAD DUAL IN SEVEN DAYS
Penn State closed out a rugged road swing of three B1G road duals in seven days by beating #3 Iowa in Iowa City, 19-13, on Jan. 28.  Penn State, wrestling at Iowa for the fifth time in the last seven meetings between the teams, won six of ten bouts to post the victory in the dual between the Big Ten’s last two unbeaten teams at the time.  Penn State won the dual’s first three bouts (Drew Hildebrandt at 125, Roman Bravo-Young at 133, Nick Lee at 141) and then three in row in the back half (Carter Starocci at 174, Aaron Brooks at 184, Max Dean at 197) to claim victory. Seven days earlier, Penn State won at #3 Michigan and five days earlier the Lions won at Michigan State.
