Mekhi Lairy, Bosse alumni, scoring machine for Miami (Ohio) basketball


Bosse graduate Mekhi Lairy (2) has eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier with Miami (Ohio).

In the fall of 2015, I ran into Mater Dei boys’ basketball coach Kurt Wildeman in the school parking lot as I prepared to conduct interviews with the Wildcats’ football team before practice.

Because the Courier & Press sports staff was also working on our upcoming basketball preview section, I asked Wildeman, “Do you see any surprises in the SIAC?”

He said, “Bosse.”

I said, “But their best player was a 5-foot-7 freshman.”

That player, of course, was Mekhi Lairy. Little did I know that he would lead the Bulldogs to a Class 3A state runner-up finish as a sophomore in the spring of 2016 and again as a senior in ‘18. Lairy went on to become the City’s career boys’ scoring leader with 2,237 points and has eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in his senior season at Miami (Ohio).
