Two Ohio universities cancel plans to merge law schools

Two Ohio universities have canceled plans to merge their law schools.

University of Akron and Cleveland State University had been discussing a possible merger since 2020, reports The Akron Beacon Journal. 

A decline in enrollment at both law schools has prompted the merger talks.. 

Steven McGarrity, executive director at the Akron office of Community Legal Aid, said that he would have been supportive of a merger so long as it maintained a presence in Akron, reports Ideasteam Public Media. 

McGarrity added that keeping law students in Akron was also important for fostering a sense of community and connecting with local organizations.

The universities released a joint statement:

“Many alumni, students, faculty, and others shared with us their strong feelings of pride in both law schools’ identity and tradition,” the statement read. “While there was widespread support for the idea of innovative programs and collaborations, many expressed concerns about the idea of a combination of the two law schools.”

Although talks of a full merger are off the table, opportunities for partnerships will continue. 

“The successful program of cross-registration in selected courses between the two law schools, now in its fourth semester, illustrates the potential for innovative cooperation,” the schools said.
