North Carolina politics: Ted Budd launches 2022 Senate bid

U.S. Congressman Ted Budd, a Republican from the Piedmont Triad, announced Wednesday morning that he’s joining the already-crowded race in 2022 for the U.S. Senate seat in North Carolina.Budd’s office highlights his “Davie County values” and small-business experience as strengths. The seat, which is up for grabs as GOP Sen. Richard Burr is retiring, is expected to be one of the top battleground races in the country next year. According to Politico, North Carolina is one of five states where Republicans are facing competitive primaries to replace retiring senators.The race is expected to be one of the most closely-divided and expensive swing states in the country, PoliticoBudd, who was first elected to the House in 2016, made his announcement in a YouTube video featuring a monster truck referred to as the “liberal agenda crusher.”The video features clips of former President Donald Trump praising Budd in previous campaign rallies. In the announcement, Budd criticizes President Joe Biden, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.Former Gov. Pat McCrory and former Rep. Mark Walker are also running for on the Republican ticket.Among Democrats, former Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court Cheri Beasley, North Carolina Sen. Jeff Jackson and former state Sen. Erica Smith have announced their intentions to run.
