CVS is now offering at-home COVID-19 tests

CVS Pharmacy this week started offering over-the-counter COVID-19 tests at its drug stores as well as online.

The retailer on Monday announced it is offering three at-home tests that have received emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and do not require a prescription. The tests are intended for use by individuals without symptoms.

The tests include the Ellume COVID-19 Home Test, the Abbott BinaxNOW COVID-19 Antigen Self Test and the Pixel by Labcorp PCR Test Home Collection Kit.

“Access to testing continues to be an important part of the nation’s pandemic response,” George Coleman, Senior Vice President and Chief Merchant of CVS Pharmacy, said in a news release.

“Making OTC [over-the-counter] COVID-19 tests available to our customers helps remove barriers by providing convenient options for testing,” Coleman said.

Both the Ellume and Abbott tests are rapid antigen tests that deliver results in 15 minutes. The Abbott kit contains two tests that the manufacturer says should be administered twice over three days with at least 36 hours between tests.

CVS says it is the first retailer to carry the Ellume test and it will be available online and in select locations in Rhode Island and Massachusetts this week with more locations coming by the end of May. The Abbott test is available at CVS.com and in 5,600 locations across the country.

The Labcorp test is a polymerase chain, the same test used by physicians across the U.S., that delivers results within 1 to 2 days. The test is available online and in select CVS locations in Alabama, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

CVS said the at-home tests are not covered by insurance and are not intended to diagnose acute coronavirus infections or test the efficacy of vaccines.
