Top Performers: Ohio Under Armour Camp

OBETZ, Ohio – The Under Armour All-America Camp Series held its Midwest stop on Sunday as a talented group of campers went through testing, drills and 1-on-1s outside of Columbus. We have some top performers below.

247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong contributed to this report.

Alpha Dog
Pickerington Central’s Sonny Styles is only a sophomore, but looks the part and had a great performance. He’s listed as an athlete with some wondering if he will grow into a linebacker because of his frame, but he competed as a defensive back in this camp and showed he could cover wide receivers man-to-man which was impressive at his size. He is an elite prospect with great physical upside and the ability to project to multiple positions and schemes.

Top Five Offensive Performers

– Purdue commit Brady Allen is who we thought had the best day in a good quarterback group. He’s a big, prototype looking prospect who throws with great power and velocity. That was particularly noticeable on this day because of the wind and Allen was the one who most consistently cut through the wind with his arm strength.

– Any time Detroit King wide receiver Lynn Wyche-El attends a camp, it can almost be pre-written that he will be a top performer. He is such a good route runner that creating separation comes very naturally to him and this event fell in line with all of the other ones we have seen this off-season where he has rarely been stopped in a one on one.

– Lexington (Ky.) Frederick Douglass wide receiver Dane Key is a Top247 recruit who performed like it at this camp. He is a smooth route runner and also can go up and get the football. We saw that on film but it was good to also see the same skill set in a camp setting against elite competition.

– Detroit Cass Tech offensive tackle Masai Reddick had some of the more eye-catching reps on the offensive line. He showed good strength and physicality in stonewalling his man. He did not get quite as many reps as some of the others but took advantage of the ones he had so he earned a spot here.

– West Bloomfield class of 2023 offensive lineman Amir Herring had strong reps as well. He drew the complements of the coaches for his punch and violent hands. What also helped him edge out others who were deserving of this spot was that his reps came against older, high-profile guys.

Top Five Defensive Performers

– In a good group of defensive backs, Lexington (Ky.) Frederick Douglass’ Ty Bryant came away with the MVP award. He initially caught the eyes of our staff in drills and then carried that into one on one competition where he had good coverage on several reps.

– Ohio State linebacker commit CJ Hicks showed why he is so highly regarded. In this setting, you are asking linebackers to play in a lot of space and he is very comfortable doing that. He can run and cover like a defensive back and was one of the best athletes at the event.

– One of the MVPs on the defensive line was Westfield (Ind.) 2022 Popeye Williams. He is a good athlete, possesses twitch and explosion, which showed up in drills but then also enabled him to win one-on-one reps.

– Another linebacker who looked the part was Devon Jackson from Omaha (Neb.) Burke. Williams is a fluid athlete who can change directions but also has the straight line speed to run with backs down the field. He showed that in covering a deep route and breaking up the pass.

– Detroit Cass Tech defensive tackle Deone Walker had two of the more flashy reps in one on ones. He is a big man but showed he was light on his feel also as he won with a spin move and another agile move which were two of the more notable reps during that portion of the camp.

Additional MVPs, UA Game Invites, Future 50 Invites

Omaha (Neb.) offensive lineman Deshawn Woods earned an invitation to the Under Armour All-America game. Woods, a four-star prospect, was one of the better looking line prospects physically. He moved very well in drills and had a couple of good one on one reps also, all of which helped him earn an invitation.

– Future 50 invites went to Styles, Detroit King quarterback Dante Moore, who was his usual self throwing the football, offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor, a stand out athlete who looked good in drills but we did not see in one on ones, and defensive linemen Brenan Vernon and Samuel Okunlola. Okunloka was one of the most impressive players in drills. He looks the part as far as his build and has a lot of twitch and athleticism. Vernon compete hard in every drill and rep. With his size, we expect him to be a strong-side end in college or potentially even an interior guy. In the secondary, Daeh McCullough earned a Future 50 invitation as well. He is a versatile high school player who we see playing as a hybrid safety-backer type in college.

– On the O-Line, the MVP was Joshua Padilla. A Top247 prospect in the 2023 class, he is strong and his use of leverage is excellent and expected from someone who is an excellent wrestler. He has picked up major offers in the last few months including Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oregon and Penn State. He plays tackle in high school, but repped inside, which is where he projects.

– Pittsburgh commit Sean Fitzsimmons out of Pennsylvania shared the defensive line MVP with Williams. Fitzsimmons was impressive in the one on one reps he took.

– The Wide Receiver MVP was Anthony Brown out of Springfield (Ohio) who looked good running the gauntlet and then gave DBs a lot of problems in one on ones with his quickness.

– The Running Back MVP was Jackson Paradis who came all the way from the Northeast and ran a couple of excellent routes and caught the ball well in drills and competition.

– The Linebackers MVP was Antwain Barham of Milan (Tenn.), a longer backer with the athleticism to cover backs in the drills.

– The Quarterback MVP was JJ Kohl, a 2023 prospect out of Ankeny (Iowa). It was a good group of quarterbacks and Kohl may not have come in with offers like some of them did but he is a big, prototype looking prospect with a strong arm.

Around the Camp

– The quarterbacks group was talented, but had to cut through a strong wind and deal with some wetness. Recent Rutgers commits Gavin Wimsatt has all the tools as far as arm strength and size. Tayven Jackson is a good athlete being recruited by schools across the country and improved as the day went along. Some of the other 2022s who we saw throw some good balls were Cole Pennington, Jaxon Dailey and Caden Veltkamp. In the 2023 class, Drew Viotto is a bigger kid who also has the power on his throws to get through the wind. We did not know as much about Colbey Lamberth from Tennessee coming in but he has height and threw some good balls. The 2024 group was strong. CJ Carr arguably threw it as well as some of the notable older guys. Isaiah Marshall also has the velocity to deal with conditions like the ones today. Danny O’Neil from Indianapolis Cathedral has good zip on his passes as well.

– At running back,Kaleb Johnson is a big prospect who showed he could catch the ball. Cincinnati commit Stephan Byrd had a nice day. A bruising back on Friday nights, we were not sure this setting would highlight his skill set but he did very well. The 2023 group was good. Christian Davis had several impressive reps. Cole Cabana is a speedy route runner who won reps against top linebackers. T.J. Harvison from down in Georgia came up and consistently flashed. He has an early Kentucky offer.

– Receiver wise, Kentrell Marks was excellent in drills and the gauntlet. He has sure hands and looks like a natural athlete. Detroit King’s Trae’vion Meadows had one of the best catches of the camp going up over a defender for a circus grab. We really liked Ryne Shackelford out of Ohio, a 2023 with some explosive qualities and good ball skills. Four-star recruit Jaden Mangham competed at receiver and had some good reps. Another multi-positional guy who competed at receiver was Breeon Ishmail who is a big, long prospect who had a nice day. 2024 Nick Marsh is a monster who comes down with passes in traffic and is on his way to being a blue-chip recruit. Shannon Blair, a 2022 from Knoxville flashed as well. Trevor Jones, a 2022 from Belleville (Mich.) was good in the gauntlet and had some strong one-on-one reps. Michigan State commit Tyrell Henry is smooth with sure hands. It was easy to see why Daevonn Hall already has offers as a freshman. He is a very talented receiver prospect. Rodney Harris from Cincinnati Princeton is someone we marked down in drills and 1-1s. Jackson McGohan, a 2023 from Miamisburg had a great catch in 1-1s. Semaj Morgan has quickness and won reps against some of the top DBs at the camp. Kenny Minchey, a quarterback from Utah, took reps on offense and had a great one-handed catch. Joseph Williams from Detroit King was a late addition who once again showed the ability to go up and win contested passes. Jameel Gardner is a smooth route-runner who have liked at…
