Ohio Softball Edged by Kent State in Series Opener

KENT, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (9-9, 5-4 MAC) returned to action on Friday afternoon (April 2), opening a four-game series against Kent State (10-12, 7-2 MAC). The Bobcats fell 3-1 in the series opener, inside the Diamond at Dix.
Kent State out-hit the Bobcats, 7-5. Senior short stop Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) led the Bobcats with two hits, one double and one RBI. Graduate student second baseman Mikenzie Vaughn (Kennesaw Ga.) added a double and a run scores, while junior first baseman Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) also recorded a double for Ohio.
The Bobcats struck first in the top of the first inning on a two out RBI double from Yun, scoring Vaughn from second to give Ohio the early 1-0 advantage.
There was little action over the next three innings until Kent State tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single up the middle from redshirt senior infielder Kristyn Eckl, knotting the game at one apiece through four frames.
The Flashes took the lead in the bottom of the sixth innings, scoring two runs on a single from redshirt senior infielder Olivia Sborlini, putting Kent State up 3-1 going to the top of the seventh. The Bobcats bats were unable to generate anything offense in the top of the seventh, falling 3-1.
In the circle, junior pitcher Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.), pitched six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out two. Meanwhile for Kent State, freshman pitcher Jessica LeBeau pitched seven innings, allowing one run on five hits, walked one and struck out nine Bobcats.
The Bobcats and Kent State are back in action tomorrow (April 3) afternoon for a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m.
