Pine Richland students, parents rally to fully reopen schools for all students

Parents and students in the Pine Richland School District rallied outside of the school board on Monday night, demanding board members vote to fully reopen schools.”We wanted a vote on record because we want to know where our school board members stand, whether they are yes or no about returning back to school,” said parent Amy Terchick. Currently, students in grades K-3 have the option of a five-day, in-person learning option, and parents want the same for the rest of the student body.”We want to be given the choice,” said Terchick. “We understand there’s families that don’t want to come back. They want to stay virtual. They want to stay hybrid. But there are people out here who’s children need 5-days a week learning and we feel that needs to be an option.””We just want them to vote publicly yes or no, do you want to go back,” said parent Patrick Eastburn. “I think they’ve already stated that they’re not going to do that for another two weeks and our concern now is that they’re just going to delay, delay delay, keep pushing it back, have another senior group lose their senior year.”Dozens of parents rallied outside of the Pine Richland School District administration office while the school board met inside. The district proposed students at Eden Hall (grades 4-6) and seniors would have the option to fully return to in-person instruction on March 18, while all other students would return April 8th. The school board tabled a vote.”Their job is not to enact policies or push agendas,” said parent Joe Cassidy. “They should be focusing on two people. The students and the teachers and they don’t even talk to either one of them. They just push down. Enough.””The goal is to get these kids back to school as quickly as possible,” said School Board Director Greg DiTullio. “We’ve got a plan to do that. I’d just like to do it quicker.””It’s two more weeks and then we’re going to come back here and then we’re going to think about it some more and that’s what they’ve said,” said Terchick. “I’m frustrated. We’ve all spoken out about how our children feel and our children are struggling.””I just think at this point we have the ability to go back five days a week,” said freshman Alex Cerminara. “I think that stalling it is kind of unneccesary and I think it would be best for everybody.”The board is expected to vote on the plan in two weeks. The district says parents will have to return a survey by Friday with the learning option they want for their child.
