Wooster High School Athletic Hall of Fame to add 11 new members
The Wooster High School Athletic Hall of Fame is inducting a new class after several years without a new member.
The hall of fame committee selected 11 alumni for their outstanding contributions while at Wooster High School, ranging from the 1950s to 2010s.
Steve Adams (class of 1985), Kirk Franks (1981), John Glasgow (1986), Jennifer Grassman (Hilaman, 1983), Rozaland Jones (2003), Krista Mann (Theys, 2002), Jenn Philippon (2012), Pat Stewart (1985), Stewart Turner (1978), Danny Wingate (1993) and Bill Zufall (1956) make up the class, which will be inducted in August.
“After reviewing over 30 very deserving nominations, the Wooster High School athletic department and hall of fame selection committee are proud to invite these eleven individuals for induction into the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame,” Wooster athletic director Alex Mallue said. “We look forward to welcoming these Generals and their families back to the high school in August to celebrate their outstanding achievements as WHS student-athletes.”
This year’s class will be recognized Friday, Aug. 26 at Wooster’s varsity football game against Wadsworth and be formally inducted Aug. 27 in a ceremony at the Wooster High School Performing Arts Center. Ticketing and other information regarding the induction, which includes dinner, will be announced later.
Adams lettered in soccer and basketball during his time at Wooster, especially starring in soccer, where he was a two-time all-district selection, along with earning All-Ohio honors in 1984.
Franks was a four-time state-qualifying swimmer, with two top-10 finishes at the state meet on his resume. Glasgow was also a star swimmer, qualifying for four state meets and earning three top-10 finishes. Stewart also qualified for two state meets, with one top-10 finish.
Grassman (now Jennifer Hilaman) was one of the top all-around athletes at Wooster during the 80s, earning All-Ohio honors in track and field twice during her career, as well as all-league basketball honors. Jones was also a track and basketball multi-sport star, earning All-Ohio honors in both sports during 2003. Mann (now Krista Theys) was another multi-sport All-Ohioan, earning the distinction in soccer and lacrosse for the Generals.
Philippon was one of the best soccer players in Wayne County history, earning two All-Ohio selections and garnering three Daily Record Girls Soccer Player of the Year awards during her playing career.
Turner was a three-sport standout in football, basketball and track, but shined the brightest on the track, where he qualified for state in three different events — the long jump, 100-yard dash and 220-yard dash. He was also a league champion three times in those three events.
Wingate starred on the basketball court, leading some of Wooster’s best teams and earning a 1993 All-Ohio nod, along with being a McDonald’s High School All-American honorable mention.
Zufall played three sports during his career, but did his best work on the golf course, qualifying for the 1955 and 1956 state golf tournaments, including placing higher than the legendary Jack Nicklaus in ’56.
The hall of fame will also present a special Blue and Golf Award to Lisa Followay, the CEO of Adaptive Sports Ohio, who helped found the Wooster City Schools wheelchair basketball team and has helped many students with physical disabilities throughout the state participate in athletics.
