Contract details, salary revealed for Ohio State’s Justin Frye

Ohio State has made a number of coaching changes this offseason and with each change comes new contracts for the coach. On Tuesday, Bucknuts received the term sheet for new Buckeye associated head coach/offensive line coach Justin Frye, who was officially hired by the Scarlet and Gray from UCLA earlier this month, through a public records request.

Frye’s contract began on Jan. 10, 2022, and runs through Jan. 31, 2024. The 38 year old will make a base salary of $800,000 subject to applicable withholdings. Frye will be up for a raise beginning on Feb. 1, 2023. Ohio State will pay Frye a one-time lump sum payment of $51,389, plus a one-time lump sum tax gross-up payment on such amount.

As is the case with all Buckeye coaches, Frye also has incentive-based bonuses as part of his contract. If the Scarlet and Gray win the Big Ten East Division (or are crowned co-champions) Frye will receive a bonus of $68,000, or 8.5 percent of his base salary. If Ohio State wins the Big Ten Championship Game during Frye’s employment, the coach will receive a $34,000 bonus, or 4.25 percent of his base salary.

Helping the Buckeyes to make a College Football Playoff bowl game will earn Frye a $136,000 bonus, or 17 percent of his base salary. A non-Playoff bowl game appearance will earn Frye $34,000, or 4.25 percent of his base salary. If the Scarlet and Gray make the Playoff semifinal but not the final, Frye will get an additional $170,000 or 21.25 percent of his base salary. A trip to the national championship game by Ohio State will earn Frye a $204,000 bonus, or 25.5 percent of his base salary.

On top of his salary and bonuses, Frye’s contract with the Buckeyes includes a $600 per month stipend for an automobile. Frye will receive six tickets to Ohio Stadium for each home Scarlet and Gray football game. Additionally, Frye will receive two tickets to each Ohio State home men’s basketball at Value City Arena game during his employment.

Frye was hired by head coach Ryan Day to replace offensive line coach Greg Studrawa. Frye will make $100,000 more than Studrawa’s base salary from the last two years. The new hire also received a $100,000 raise over what he made as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the Bruins under Chip Kelly.

In addition to his time in Los Angeles, Frye has previously worked at Indiana, his alma mater, and Florida as a graduate assistant and Temple and Boston College as an offensive line coach. It was during his time with the Owls and Eagles where Frye met and worked with Day prior to coming to Ohio State.
