Beaumont School in Cleveland Heights appoints four new board members

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — Beaumont School recently appointed four new board members to three-year terms. The new board members have direct ties to the school and backgrounds in medicine, law and finance.

“We are honored and grateful as we welcome these talented leaders to the Beaumont School Board of Directors,” School President Wendy Hoke noted in a press release. “Our board members fully support and guide the mission of Beaumont School with a genuine passion for an all-girls, Ursuline education.”

The new appointees are:

— Dr. Joseph Hahn, a neurosurgeon and the former chief of staff at Cleveland Clinic. His granddaughters Grace and Ellen Brandon both graduated from Beaumont.

— Gina Huffman (Class of 1984), assistant director of Law Admissions for the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Gina and her daughter Britney are both Beaumont graduates.

— Shannon Jerse, deputy general counsel at Sisters of Charity Health System. Her daughters Mairin and Liz are both Beaumont alumna.

— Mary Frances Monroe (Class of 1976), director at the Institute of International Finance in Washington, D.C.

They can each serve a maximum of two terms.

Teachers named Exemplars

In other school news, Beaumont teachers Gretchen Santo, Maggie Mueller and Rebecca Hamrick were recently named Exemplars in Science Education by The Ohio Academy of Science.

“The award recognizes their outstanding efforts to incorporate inquiry-based research and technological design into their classroom to effectively teach and motivate intrinsic learning,” a press release stated.

Due to their outstanding efforts, Beaumont students excelled in the 2021 District Science Day and State Science Day.

And for the first time in 20 years, Beaumont received the Harold C. Shaw Memorial Outstanding School Award at last year’s State Science Day, for having four or more students receive a “Superior” score on their research projects.

“Through the guidance of our science educators, nine Beaumont students earned ‘Excellent’ or ‘Superior’ ratings on their projects at State Science Day,” the press release stated.

Beaumont became one of 14 Ohio schools to receive the recognition.

“We are proud of Mrs. Santo, Mrs. Mueller and Mrs. Hamrick and the recognition of their impact on our students’ lives from this well-deserved award from The Ohio Academy of Science,” Beaumont Principal Nick Beyer noted.

“With their guidance, our teachers set the stage for our students to succeed both in and outside our classrooms,” Beyer added. “Through unique, inquiry-based teaching, they ensure students develop skills in critical thinking and creative problem-solving necessary to succeed in today’s world.”

Take the world forward

Beaumont senior Grace Salata will participate in the Take the World Forward Fellowship, a six-month virtual collaboration with the Harvard College Project for Asian and International Relations, the Harvard Leadership Institute and the MIT Solv[ED] program.

The hand-selected participants from across the world will work together to identify some of today’s biggest challenges, think critically and brainstorm sustainable solutions under the guidance of the Ivy League mentors, a press release noted.

“I’m confident this fellowship will provide me an opportunity to use the skills I have acquired through my IB courses for real life, global situations,” Grace noted in a press release.

She added that she was inspired by the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme she takes at Beaumont.

“I hope to learn how to more concretely solve world issues such as homelessness, hunger and global warming through communication and technology.”
